New Zealand Wins 'Green' Tourism Award

New Zealand Wins Green Tourism Award
New Zealand has been named the world leader in responsible tourism.

The country was victorious in the Overall Winner and Best Destination categories at the Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Awards.

It was the first time New Zealand had been nominated for an award in the competition, which recognises destinations where tourism is being used to benefit local communities.

According to the judges, the country's record is proof of the fact that tourism can be used "to help make better places to live and to visit".

The judges continued: "If more national governments followed their example, tourism would make a much more positive contribution around the world."

New Zealand has a "spectacularly beautiful landscape" and is one of the world's least-crowded countries, with a population of four million people, reports the country's tourism board.

The country has a temperate climate and often attracts people seeking adrenalin sports as well as those on the lookout for a purely relaxing getaway.
